Where do we go from here?
At the risk of setting people against eachother, my curiousity wants to know.
The two plans for ground-zero of Sept. 11, 2001 is either.
A. A freedom tower, designed to be the tallest in the world.
B. A memorial park.
What do you favor? Why?

I think a tower is a better idea too. We need to rebuild what was destroyed. And they can put a park anywhere.
I think when we erect a tower that terrorists would see it as a goal to knock down, i dont think its very prudent. a modest park wouldnt create any threat
I could be wrong, but a park sort of seems like giving up. Like...they knocked us down and we're staying down. A tower, on the other hand, would say that although they knocked us down, we can get right back up again.
Hooray America.
Eh. Well I think a park would be better. A tower would be nice, but like 'farizz' said it could be another terroists goal.
Besides, what would the building be used for? Offices? I don't know. I think we should remember what happened. Instead of having people go to work like every other building in New York City, in a place where thousands died cause of a terrible act.
Okay, now my opinion since I have waited about a day. I think a park (I have done a little research aka get really bored and watch MSNBC) because the tower they are planning on building is going to be mostly offices and have only a small memorial set aside in the basement 3 floors down, for "important events" (holocaust, civil rights movement, abolition of slavery) and then only part of the memorial is going to be for 9/11. Furthermore the people who are heading the project want to politisize (sarah, spelling?) it by adding drawings like "How the patriot acts is restricting our rights." (ACLU man is the chairman of the board for the tower) I agree with what one of the family members of one of the victims said "I think it is great, we should build a tower, and it should reflect on all the tragedies of the world and including 9/11 but let's put it somewhere else than ground zero." I think a tower would be really cool, but the way it is being planned, I don't think it is really a memorial enough. I think a park would better memorialize and facilitate more people. It also does not run the risk of a repeat 9/11 because I do not think America could handle something like that again. (wow that was WAY too long, I usually like to be brief.)
dude, build a flipping tower. the whole point of the war on terror is to beat down the terrorists. i agree perfectly with gemini. how demoralizing would that be? if you have a great success and destroy something, only to have it built back even bigger... its perfect. and i say its impossible for us to invite more terrorism. it doesn't matter what we do, they will keep trying to kill us in any way possible. but i think the tower should not have political messages, because it is something that should unite the country, not divide by attacking others' opinions.
I'm still sticking to the park thing. I am not saying we should live in caves. That's not the idea of the park. If people want to build a tower, go ahead, but why make it have businesses and offices in it? Sure, the orginal towers had that, but that was BEFORE they were attacked. People died there. I don't know. I just really think there should be a complete memorial to it.
Like, look at Gettysburg. People didn't build over it. We kept all that land just open, to remember the battle and to remember all the lives lost.
Obviously not everything is always saved and preserved, or no land would ever be built on. But this was a huge event that impacted a lot of people, we should remember it, to remember that America isn't invicible. Remember before 9/11? No one remembered what being patriotic meant. It was a harsh reminder, but none the less a reminder. So I think we should always remember it...
Basically by having a park. Maybe a tower, I just don't know if you can make a 'memorial tower' like completly.
I don't know about this white house comparrison. As I googled it up. It burned down in 1812. The country was still young. As they needed another one. We don't NEED another tall building in New York.
people will remember 9/11 whether or not there is a memorial. I dont like the idea of our buildings being knocked down and letting them stay down. terrorists should know that we are stronger than they are.
I don't think any of us is suggesting we forget about it. I don't think any of us could if we tried.
And by the way, saying "it's just a memorial in the basement of a tower" sounds really retarded. I seriously doubt there'd be a sign in the lobby pointing down some dark staircase that leads to a dingy basement with cement floors and a lightbulb hanging from the ceiling with a few pictures and flowers and some patriotic music playing in the background. It is going to be a place of rememberence and respect whether we build a park or a tower with a memorial.
Saying that building a tower will create a threat for all the people who work there is like saying that anyone who works in a tower anywhere in America is at risk of dying from a terrorist attack. Well, you could also get killed by a drunk driver whenever you get in your car and go somewhere, but that doesn't stop you, does it?
And it's "politicize."
i dont think we need to get a bigger tower merely to show terrorists that we are better than them... is americas ego that big?? have we not retaliated enough by bombing iraq?? it seems that some people will only be satisfied with the revenge of 9/11 if they end up standing over a dead terrorists body
if we had retaliated enough, there would be no more suicide bombings. and besides, building a tower is not retaliating and is much different than standing over a terrorists dead body. it is only sending a message that they cant keep us down no matter how hard they try.
Yeah, I think I could be swayed on this. I still think the best idea is build it somewhere other than ground zero because it accomplishes the same purpose of rebuilding and showing we are strong, but it still keeps the land sacred. I think it is a good comprimise.
I said "I think" and "still" too many times in that last comment.
I didn't read all the comments--just so you know.
I think it's great to have a memorial to remember what we've gone through and where we've come from--because it's the past that has made us who we are today.
At the same time, I don't know how I feel about either one of the suggestions. What the heck is a FREEDOM TOWER anyway? A bunch of offices, does not scream freedom to me. But a park? What? No.
I'm not saying that they are inerrantly bad ideas, I'm just, well I'll get ther ein a minute. Back to the park. I don't understand how a park is supposed to help us remember anything. Yay trees! Oh, sad, peple died. Is it just me? I am failing to see the connection.
I understand the idea of remember and commemorating the dead. Don't get me wrong, I really do, I think it's great. But at the same time, they're gone, the country has moved on. I don't think we should forget them, but why such the big fuss over all this? Do you know what I mean? Why is it such a big deal? Let dead bury the dead. They are gone, we can do nothing for them. Put your hand to the work ahead. Like protecting those that lived. Like rebuilding Iraq, whether you want us there or not. (because like it or not, we are there and we aren't just going to leave no matter how much you want us to)
Do you know what I mean? I am not trying to be unsympathetic, I know that people died and things were lost and we will never feel quite so secure again. But there is so much more to life than remembering those who have passed on. There is work to be done, set your mind on these things, not on the past.
and what is a "freedom tower" anyway?
heres what i think it should look like
i doubt anyone would want to work in this 'freedom tower' even if it was built due to the fact that the other two were dropped... the more i think about it i really dont care, it doesnt effect me in any way shape or form.
that was kind of my point. that no matter what we do, there will always be suicidal terrorists. so i agree with everything sara said. hooray.
